Photographer's Description:

While on my way home from work I spotted this little 95+ year old spanish man just off the freeway feeder in Houston. He was definitely not your tipical begger as he had a hard time even walking.

He was happy as a teenager in love for the first time and was playing and singing his soul out to all the street cars passing by.

I pulled over and signaled to him to come my way and he slowly walked over singing even louder with a large smile for the camera.

He was more than happy to finish the day me, however after taking 50 pics I handed him a gift; he blew me a kiss and ended his time with a bow

Truly a man in love for the last time.

Word From the Weird

Should you take an article released on April Fool's Day seriously? Probably not. Anyway, J. Antonio Farfan is giving a lecture on his theories about Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper Thursday, April 9th at 6 pm at Bering and James Gallery. Monterrey, Mexico native Farfan has researched the Last Supper since its restoration in the 1990s and believes that numbers are hidden in the image that have been left uninterpreted. Here's a clip from the press release:

"Farfan is the author of "Cerca Trova: The Last Words of Leonardo da Vinci" published in 2006. The book outlines arcane clues Farfan detected as he studied the ancient portrait, Mona Lisa. In the book, he provides an answer to one of the most mysterious questions in art history: Who is the Mona Lisa and what does she represent?

Farfan’s answer was new to the art world. He said the woman with the enigmatic smile is Deborah, a little-known prophet and military leader described in the Old Testament.

“The theory about the ‘Last Supper,’" said Farfan, "builds on my findings about the Mona Lisa, where I point out the significance of the Roman numerals hidden within the Mona Lisa’s hands. My newest theory strengthens the previous one by placing a clear link between the literature in Leonardo’s library and the Fathers of the Church. The web-based method of research used by Farfan mimics the similarities between this technology-based era and that of the renewal of literary investigation in the Renaissance."

Made from the bridges of these ships, Mr. Vest´s photographs document the petrochemical and fuel refining industries that create a hellish landscape of fire and brimstone that would scare the pants off Americans from outside Houston.

News on Leigh Boone from caringbridge.org

pic via chron

Visit CaringBridge to leave your good thoughts for Leigh Boone, assistant Houston Center for Photography, who was caught in the middle of two fire trucks racing to beat each other to a call.

Firefighter Warren Ducote was cited for running the red light- the lights on Westheimer automatically change to green whenever an emergency vehicle approaches them and Ducote STILL ran it.

Here's yesterday's note on CaringBridge about Boone's recovery:

Hello everyone and thank you so much for all your support.

To get up to date I will just say that yesterday (Friday) went well though she was and still is in critical condition. The swelling in the head has subsided to safe levels and now we are facing a new array of problems. Leigh is in a coma and this morning the doctor told Linda that it is still very early and what we are dealing with is the likelihood of some type of disability. I believe that is good news and we all know Leigh will put up the good fight. She is so strong.

So folks please know we are running a marathon. Meaning in addition to the support everyone is giving Leigh she is also in need of your patience.

Once again keep the prayers, kind thoughts and good vibes coming, please.

Jandek

"Calling Jandek a "cult hero" would be about as much of an understatement as calling him "prolific." Since 1978, the eccentric Houston singer-songwriter savant has released more than 50 albums on his own Corwood Industries label, which is accessible only via P.O. Box.

Jandek's music is rich with imagery steeped in religion, geography and numerology, and played in a style (in tunings of his own devising) that straddles the line between avant-garde art songs and ancient East Texas country-blues.

Jandek has had a profound influence on minimalist musicians such as Smog's Bill Callahan, the Mountain Goats' John Darnielle and Minnesota trio Low. Paul Friedrichs's 2004 documentary Jandek on Corwood must have shaken something loose in the reclusive artist — up until then, he had never performed live, but now does a handful of shows every year in the U.S., Canada and Europe. Sunday's matinee at Rudyard's, though, is Jandek's first-ever public performance in his hometown; his only other appearance was a walk-on with improvisational duo Loren Conners and Alan Licht in 2006.
