If You Can't Get There One Way...

... Get there another! Phillip Perez might not have won the Artadia award this year, but he did just collect $20,000 from the City of Houston to settle a wrongful arrest lawsuit stemming from an unpleasant incident at the Westheimer Block Party.

the beginning of the mess

The worst part for the city is that Perez aka ARTICLE had been working with their Graffiti Task force- according to a Chron article- "to paint anti-smoking murals in the city and to educate law enforcement about graffiti."

They basically busted their own informant and the ACLU bit them in the ass.

"let me have proof of your existence"

"Mr. Perez is very happy," said Randall Kallinen, his attorney. "This shows that people will not stand for being illegally arrested. Mr. Perez stood up for his rights."

I offer a life-size bronze sculpture of the Texas Longhorn. This original sculpture measures approximately 6' H x 9' L with a 7' horn spread. Horn style choices are available as well as personalized branding. Contact me for references, other examples of my work and answers to questions you may have.

Well, it sure as fuck is big.
Would you buy a cow from this crazy guy?

Now That's Just Stupid

Johann Boudreaux talks like an artist. He says things like "this was concept driven," and "you're thinking outside the box when you look at it". Unfortunately Boudreaux is talking about his cardboard chair, a concept clearly covered thirty years ago by Frank Gehry.

Tha Trillest

(Southern Hip-hop Awards)

David Banner took home the inaugural Pimp C trillest artist award, designated for a performer who has "expressed personal views and been outspoken about controversial topics in and outside of music."

...true to form, he let his views be known on the current state of presidential politics.

Banner said backstage; "Black people -- chill out on Obama for a second... Obama is trying to be the president of the United States, not the president of black people. Allow the man to run what he's doing and run his course and get in the office."

Oh yeah. Mike Jones got sucker punched by Trae too.

Bookstop and the 13,000 Feet

Graustark

Will Bookstop be torn down? Swamplot starts restarts the rumors.

I worked there for about three years, and I imagine it is as sleepy today as ever. I was a really bad employee.

I would imagine any wrecking balls will have a tough time getting traction... All the lawyer heavies come in, and the River Oaks high schoolers (the girls always have black eyes and bandages from nosejobs each August) with their AmEx parents.

The building is the oldest remaining theater in Houston, and the crazy colors and murals are from a short-lived Italian Seafood restaurant that operated there in the 80s. Sometimes people would come in and say they saw The Empire Strikes Back there- I bet it was the last film ever shown in the theater.

p.s.- it has been on the endangered list for over a year.

Rumor Mill In August

wools

Is Jim Pirtle bringing the flavor of Notsuoh, his antiquated and ramshackle calling card in the heart of downtown Houston, to tony Chelsea for a show?

Rumor is that the upstairs will be crated and shipped- along with some of the hard-drinkin' regulars- to New York for a gallery show curated by Jack Massing and Michael Galbreth at CUE Art Foundation!

Notsuoh = Houston spelled backwards

Obama Artworld

Shepherd Fairley? Thanks Glasstire.

Apparently some people have never heard of OBEY.

Moving on, all that noise about Obama and the artworld is gaining some traction in print- check out THIS article from the San Francisco Chronicle.

There is enough Barack artwork out there to fill a blog for three months, and it'll only get bigger over the next three. Check out The Obama Art Report- and if you have a moment, read Obama's Plan for the Arts.

FYI
McCain's art clout is for shit.
