Transgender Day of Remembrance

On Saturday, November 17, 2007 at 7 p.m. the transgender community of Houston and southeast Texas and its allies will gather at the Holocaust Museum (5401 Caroline, 77004) to honor those killed because they didn’t conform to traditional gender norms. The event is part of the internationally coordinated 9th Annual Transgender Day of Remembrance to be held in more than 90 cities worldwide.

The Houston Transgender Unity Committee organizes the event, which always includes a reading of the names of the murdered people. The event this year will also include remarks by local trans people who have recently been victims of violence. Local politicians, including City Controller Annise Parker and City Council member Sue Lovell, are expected to attend. A 6:30 reception will precede the program.

We live in times more sensitive than ever to hatred based violence. Over the last decade more than one person per month has died due to transgender-based hate or prejudice, regardless of any other factors in their lives. This trend shows no sign of abating. Many of these crimes against transgender individuals remain unreported and unsolved. There is also a great deal of violence and discrimination aimed at the gender diverse population

Although not every person represented during the Day of Remembrance self-identified as transgender, each was a victim of violence based on bias against transgender people.

The Day Of Remembrance serves several purposes. It raises public awareness of hate crimes against transgender people, it allows us to publicly mourn and honor the lives of our brothers and sisters who might otherwise be forgotten, and it expresses love and respect for all people in the face of national indifference and hatred. It also reminds non-transgender people that we are their sons, daughters, parents, friends and lovers and gives our allies a chance to step forward and stand with us.

More information is available at the Unity Committee website, www.htuc.org, and the TransHouston site, www.transhouston.com.

Airplane Humor

A couple from Texas and a couple from the east coast were seated side by side on an airplane.

The girl from Texas said, "So, where ya'll from?"

The east coast girl said, "From a place where they know better than to use a preposition at the end of a sentence."

The girl from Texas sat quietly for a few moments and then replied: "So, where ya'll from, bitch?"

Come out for Artcrawl this Saturday!

A message to all members of ArtsHouston

Come out to DiverseWorks on Saturday, November 17 for Jean-Baptiste André's new work comme en plein jour (as in full day). We will also be hosting a reception immediately following the performance with drinks and appetizers. Buy your tickets in advance by calling 713.335.3445 anytime and get $5 off general admission tickets for the Saturday performance when you mention ArtsHouston! Performance starts at 8pm. Read the cover story about Jean-Baptiste online!

Jean-Baptiste André continues to research the body, the topic of identity, and the notion of metamorphosis in his new work, comme en plein jour (as in full day). Jean-Baptiste is fascinated by the metamorphosis figure and how the body, in a wide and clear space, can create shapes and form; This diptych to 2004's Interieur Nuit is powered by an electronic score, where circus, dance, and video art meet in a world of uncertain identity, shifting colour, startling landscapes, and skewed perspective.

Jean-Baptiste has recently been working as the artist-in-residence at the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media in Japan. He has been working with musician Aoki Takamasa and videographer Noriko Matsumoto to investigate the connections between dance, camera, music and technology. Andre has also been working with noted multi-media installation artist Robin Rhode on a work on video titled The Storyteller.

Myspace in the Gallery

Brian Piana has made exhibits and installations out of websites several times now; this one is a graphic representation of Lawndale's Myspace friends stripped clean of information.

A Patricia Johnson swan song HERE... I got a call in June about Meredith Long hiring a gallery assistant but never heard back, they've been renovating the parking lot over the last month... I guess this is what they were gearing up for... they demolished a building so people would stop blocking San Felipe trying to valet...

The whole enterprise is haughty paintings for haughty people... ain't it great when articles about art start off with a description of a dog? I should do that... That's Houston for ya-Long didn't move to the River Oaks Shopping Center because there already was a paint store slash gallery there and two would be too much ('course that was '54, there's three galleries there now and two too many)

Katrina looses her ArtHouse Prize

from craigslist Austin

So this is a kind of embarrassing and definitely a long shot but here it is:

On Friday night, my beautiful and extremely talented girlfriend Katrina Moorhead won the prestigious ArtHouse Texas Prize. This is a prize given every other year to the best emerging artist in Texas (who, as a jury of artist and curators decided, is clearly katrina). It is a big honor and quite prestigious. At the awards ceremony they presented her with the award, a troupe of dancing women in cowboy outfits, and a commemorative belt buckle. They also presented all of us with copious amounts of free alcohol.

To make a long and slightly fuzzy story short, we left stubbs (the site of the ceremony), went for a celebratory dance party at the Beauty Bar, had a celebratory slice of pizza, and then made a long and celebratory stumble back to the Radisson where we were staying. Upon our arrival we came to the shocking realization that the belt buckle was no longer in Katrina's bag where she had put it. It had disappeared along with several ugly t-shirts, a commemorative plate, several breakfast tacos (?), and some other crappy pap somewhere between her receiving it on stage and us getting into the elevator. She went back out looking for it, but to no avail. The following day we retraced our steps. We talked to the lovely people at the Beauty Bar and the pizza truck, none of whom had found a large belt buckle.

As you can imagine this is somewhat upsetting, not to mention extremely embarrassing. It is kind of like winning a gold medal at the olympics, then getting wasted on jager shots with the women's speed skating team and waking up in a snowbank with a parking cone on your head and realizing your gold medal is gone.

The Belt Buckle is a large silver oval with the words ArtHouse Texas Prize 2007 on it. It was in blue jewelry box, which you probably already know if you found it. While we all know that it is cool and ironic to rock the giant belt buckle, this is a belt buckle who's real owner would really like to rock it, so if you found it please return it. There is a reward, or you have the option to trade it in for another cool belt buckle. Or, if you wanted to, you could even go check out her show (which is still up at arthouse), realize that she is, in fact, the best emerging artist in texas, and re-award it to her in a special ceremony.

Form Over Function

"It seems like every summer they do testing and try to prevent the leaks and every winter it leaks again," he said. "When it leaks they put these big buckets out and move things around so it doesn't drip onto the computers."

Up in Boston they're suing Frank Gehry over the little things that don't come in to play when you're winning architecture awards.
