Heads Up

Phone booth stuffing Saturday, 12 noon, Westheimer at Kirby. Please wear white.

via the Payphone Project

"Scotland's Pennan phone box, declared by a local tourism board as "the most famous phone booth in the world," was the scene of record breaking achievement. 16 gymnasts filled the famous phone box, breaking the booth-stuffing record set in 2003 in Edinburgh, where 12 adults and 2 children succeeded on their second attempt to fill a booth with themselves.

The Edinburgh record only includes 2 children, though, while the more recent Pennan booth-cram was all youngsters. Is it inevitable, then, that another record-seeking group will fill a booth with, say, 29 infants or 30 dwarfs?

The Payphone Project asks: When will standards be set in defining the terms of this critical world record?"

YouthArt Multifest wants to present art-media crossover and to make a connection between young artists from all around the world without concern for nationality and race, only artistic expression is important. The most important part of the festival is the international character, where domestic audiences will be introduced to contemporary multimedia art, especially performance art. Festival wants to make connections between young people so that they may learn from each other’s experiences and make lasting relationships through collaboration. One of the characteristics of the festival is educational, especially to young people, so that wider audience may be introduced with contemporary art praxis.

Bringing artists from Europe and other countries from around world to Pancevo is our main goal, a contribution to the artworld to show that art doesn’t have borders.

Outdoor Screening of Dallas at the Contemporary Arts Museum

Thursday, October 11, 2007 7:30 p.m.

Episode #55—No More Mister Nice Guy (Part I)—A cleaning woman discovers J.R. sprawled across the floor of his office. He is rushed to the hospital, close to death. The Ewing family reassembles to wait for news of his fate and police search for clues and suspects in the shooting. The family hopes for J.R. to regain consciousness and be able to shed some light on the identity of his assailant.

Episode #56—No More Mister Nice Guy (Part II)— As J.R. undergoes his second operation, Bobby takes over Ewing Oil with Jock's blessing. Sue Ellen tries to combat the guilt that makes her believe she may have shot her husband in a drunken stupor. She unsuccessfully fights against the operation that could either let J.R. walk again or cost him his life. Alan Beam is brought back to Dallas by the police. Cliff Barnes is taken into custody. Marilee Stone institutes a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the Ewings. Lucy meets and is frustrated by a poor medical student who resists her advances.

Well, it's Free!

Really?

Metro Police Chief Tom Lambert said
the driver briefly stopped at the red light,
then drove into the path of the oncoming train.

How can we expect to justify public transportation when this thing crashes into people all the time?

The ridiculous debacle continues. This morning there's THIS article in the Chronicle about the light rail sending someone to the hospital. It doesn't matter who's fault it is, people outside the loop are still going to assume that the train is dangerous. Reduced visibility in SUVs make the train dangerous, just like the rest of the time on the road is more dangerous in an SUV. As I walked from Kirby and Richmond to Westheimer and Montrose while waiting for either the 25 or the 82- which I never saw- I cursed the horrible job METRO does with the buses in the city. When I heard about the rubber road compromise for the new east-west line I couldn't believe the load of bullshit being shoveled. Its like the monorail Simpsons episode. The company is gorging itself on a new grant of $1.5 million to teach its employees to be paranoid about terrorist attacks on the 42 bus through the Third Ward. There's a document floating around detailing METRO CEO Frank Wilson's kickback-laden past in the New Jersey Transit Corporation. He also has a history in San Francisco as the GM of the BART public transportation system, which supposedly involved rubber road bus service as well, but I can't find any documentation so it's just conjecture. What are we going to do with $5.8 billion and a promise to connect the city for once? Well we won't try and connect the two major neighborhoods- Downtown/Midtown/Montrose and the Galleria, instead we'll bend to local pressure and sacrifice the city's well being for the rich bastards who can afford to complain. Why isn't anyone along Wheeler Street complaining? They'll go under when the 3-6 years of construction start too, but they're not white people or rich brats. You can't hear them! The mayor should just annex Richmond ALL the way to the Beltway. People want it. Screw this bullshit putting around. I want a city with a real backbone, dammit.

The bandana has been used by artists worldwide to conceal their identities; so we thought it would be a good idea for a show, not to mention the fact that a bandana makes a perfect small canvas that can be folded up and mailed easily.

Bandanas are worn around the neck by cowboys, farmers, bakers, and railroad engineers to wipe the sweat off their faces, and keep dust out of their collars. Anarchists and political activists have been known to wear black bandanas and hoodies to keep their faces from being photographed.

Amazing music in a one-of-a-kind folk art environment, an experience that could only happen in Houston. Over the course of the last fifteen years Howe has served as front man for Giant Sand, been a member of OP8, become a label owner and perhaps most importantly become a family man.

Fitzgerald’s, 2706 White Oak, is pleased to be hosting the 20th Anniversary of The AXIOM Reunion Show.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the opening of Houston’s Axiom nightclub (1987-1992), roughly twenty bands from the late eighties and early nineties will reunite to play for fans, many of them for the first time in over a decade.

Bands performing at the two-night reunion show include Sprawl, Academy Black (featuring Michael Haaga formerly of dead horse), de Schmog, Cinco Dudes, Bayou Pigs, Joint Chiefs/Fleshmop, and many more. Musicians will be flying in from California, Washington, Colorado, Nevada, New York, Illinois, and even Brazil to commemorate the creatively fertile scene that evolved around the Axiom.

José Clemente Orozco, Gods of the Modern World 1932

PBS, 10pm tonight, American Masters goes south for a show on José Clemente Orozco. Did you know the extent of his murals? He painted from New Hampshire down to Guadalajara; two great ones are at the New School University in New York and The House of Tiles in Mexico City. The one above is at Dartmouth, where there is a cycle of 24 works, The Epic of American Civilization.

Signal To Noise Ratio

This Houston experimental music magazine might have won 'Zine of the Year in 2007 from the Plug Independent Music Awards, but their mag is all high end as far as I can see. Check out cover boys Animal Collective, an art collective/experimental noise band that has balanced themselves between the artworld (villified by ADA) and noise (villified by MAN). Established ten years ago in Burlington, Vermont they are now published out a house off 11th Street in the Heights. Available at Sound Exchange and Domy Books.
